How to Apply

New Undergraduates and Postgraduates

If you are applying for September 2012 you can:

provided you have an offer of a place at MMU and you have made MMU your firm choice, that is Unconditional Firm (UF) or Conditional Firm (CF).

If you are holding a conditional firm offer please DO NOT WAIT until it is made unconditional.

If MMU is your insurance choice (i.e. you are holding a Conditional Insurance (CI) offer of a place), you cannot apply for MMU Accommodation until you have been released from contract by the University that you are holding an offer for.

IMPORTANT

All correspondence between the Residential Services Office and our applicants will be conducted via the e-mail address you have supplied on your application form. Please ensure that you have added apply4accommodation@mmu.ac.uk to your “safe senders” list and check your e-mail account REGULARLY including “junk mail” or any other relevant subfolders. The email will state the deadline for accepting the offer and how to make the initial payment (or for you to decline the offer). If you miss the deadline, the offer will lapse and the room will be offered to another student.

Please do not use a school or college email account as these often expire during the summer vacation.

Every student who is offered accommodation in a University hall (with the exception of Victoria Hall – see separate paragraph) will receive an offer or a room via their e-mail address and must make an initial rent payment of £100 by the date stated in the offer to secure your accommodation. This is your first instalment of the rent. By paying this within the specified time period stated on the offer you are agreeing to a legally binding contract so please read the Terms and Conditions which are available to download from the accommodation website.

The deadline for requesting release from MMU accommodation contract without penalty is 31st August 2012. If you make the initial rent payment after 1st September 2012 and subsequently request release from the contract, the University will not be obliged to refund your payment.

Victoria Hall

Victoria Hall is a privately owned development and MMU has reserved accommodation for MMU students. If you are offered Victoria Hall, the room is allocated by University staff but your contract will be directly with the owners of the hall and not the University. You will be asked for an initial rental payment of 20% of the total hall fee, £924 - £966 (depending on room type) to secure the accommodation.  Successful applicants will be sent an offer of accommodation by e-mail. Your contract information will be e-mailed to you with other important documents. These can be quite large attachments, so you should ensure that your e-mail account can receive them. You will need to print and return the required documents and the pre-payment, within the stipulated timescale.

If you cancel before 31st August 2012 you will have £100 deducted from the initial rental payment and the remainder refunded to you.

If you make the initial rental payment after 1st September 2012 and subsequently request release from the contract, Victoria Hall will not be obliged to refund your payment.

How we allocate

UF Students: If you are holding an Unconditional Offer we will process your application from July onwards

CF Students: If you are holding a conditional offer we will process your application as soon as your results and your offer become unconditional.  For those of you who are waiting on A level results this will be the middle of August.

CI Students: Unfortunately students holding MMU as their insurance choice are not able to apply for accommodation until they are released from their first choice University.  As soon as your released you will be apply to apply for Accommodation

Priority in all instances will be given to students who are Care Leavers and those students with a disability/medical condition and those students outside the 25 miles radius.

What happens if you go through Clearing?

If you have applied through clearing you’ll be making your application for accommodation late in the summer. Although it is late, you can still apply online and we will do our best to find you a place to live. If there are no vacancies in University halls, we will help you find accommodation in the private sector.

If you are unable to apply online please contact the Residential Services Office directly.

If successful, we will email an offer of accommodation to you at the email address you provide on the online application. You will be asked to confirm your acceptance of the place with an initial payment of £100. Please ensure that the email address you provide is accessible by you and that you are able to check it on a daily basis.

Accommodation Outside of September

Nursing Students (March intake) / MSc Physiotherapy Students (January intake)

Please make an application for these courses in the two months prior to your start date and we will advise on the status of your application within one month. Please be advised that you are likely to be allocated with students studying courses other than Nursing and Physiotherapy because of your late entry but this will allow you to have a more rounded experience of University Life. Contracts for accommodation will end in July. If you require a longer stay in accommodation you will be able to secure ‘Casual let’ accommodation in a hall on the All Saints Campus until the end of August. Please contact Residential Services after Easter to find out more details about summer accommodation. Residential Services regret that we are unable to offer 12 month accommodation contracts from January or March.

I was quite nervous about moving away from home, but after a week it almost felt like I’d never lived anywhere else. During Fresher’s Week everybody is in the same boat as you, so you meet a lot of new people and socialise together. Soon enough it just feels like home. Carmel Branch
