Alicia Sanchez Requena was the first PhD researcher for FLAME. As of 2017, she is in the final stages of her PhD study on Audiovisual Translation in Teaching Foreign Languages: the use of Intralingual Dubbing to Improve Speed, Intonation and Pronunciation in Spontaneous Conversations, which she is completing at Manchester Metropolitan University with AHRC NWDTCP sponsorship. Her project involves fieldwork with secondary schools in the Greater Manchester area. Approximately 50 A-Level students replace the voice of original actors in Spanish as a tool to develop their oral expression in the foreign language. Her supervisors are Dr Carmen Herrero (Director of FLAME) and Dr Noa Talaván (Associate member of FLAME).
Alicia is currently Spanish Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, where she teaches on stages 1 to 6. At higher education level, she has previously taught Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University and at the University of Chester, as a Visiting Lecturer. At secondary education level, she worked at Royal Grammar School Guildford, where she taught at the KS3, KS4 and KS5 stages, as well as at specific courses for university entry.
Alicia holds a MA in Linguistic Applied to Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (University Antonio of Nebrija, Spain), where she obtained full marks for her dissertation on using intra-lingual dubbing. She has also attained the QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) in 2011 and completed a Degree in Legal Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada (Spain) in 2009. She is completing a PGCHE (Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education), which on completion will grant her status as Fellow of the HEA. In 2015, Rosa Alonso-Perez started her PhD research in Audiovisual translation and language learning: Enhancing students’ motivation and intercultural awareness through film subtitling projects with Dr Carmen Herrero (FLAME Director) and Dr Noa Talaván (UNED and FLAME Associate Member) as co-supervisors. In addition to studying her PhD part-time, she works full-time as a Lecturer in Spanish and ERASMUS Academic Coordinator at Sheffield Hallam University.
For two years running, Rosa has successfully managed a film-subtitling project with university students learning Spanish that culminates in a Spanish Short Film Festival designed to showcase students’ work to an international audience. The project was awarded the Pedagogic Innovation Fund from the Sheffield Business School.
Prior to her current role, Rosa has worked as Associate Lecturer in Spanish at Sheffield Hallam University and Assistant Coordinator and Spanish Tutor at the Modern Languages Teaching Centre (MLTC), University of Sheffield. She has also worked on a freelance basis as Voice-Over and Subtitling Assistant for Adelphi Translations Ltd based in Sheffield.
She completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Audiovisual Translation (AVT) at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona through distance learning, studying core modules Theory of AVT, Dubbing, Subtitling and Multimedia (Localisation) which broadened her interest areas and led to completion of an additional course in Videogame Localisation. She went on to complete an MA in Audiovisual Translation in 2014 before beginning her PhD in 2015.
