Why we are number one

MMU hit number 1 in the 2013 People and Planet Green League Table of 140 universities, after rising spectacularly from 91st when the league tables were first produced in 2007.

The Green league is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK Universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance.

Most notably, MMU have:

  • Reduced carbon emissions by nearly 20% since 2005/6
  • Switched to 100% electricity from renewable sources for their non-residential estate
  • One of the largest arrays of photovoltaic and solar thermal panels in Manchester
  • Ensure the vast majority of wastes are diverted from landfill (95% of waste is now reused or recycled!)
  • Invested in Zero Carbon, Zero Waste and Zero Water campuses as part of the University’s capital programme
  • Continued to lower carbon footprint through a range of flagship behaviour change projects such as Green Impact, Zero Waste and Big impact.
