Manchester Metropolitan University has been named a leader of sustainability in the Uswitch Green Universities Report for the fourth consecutive year.

The University was rated Gold in the annual report, which is reserved for excellent-performing universities, for its green initiatives and renewable energy.

For Manchester Met, these include being on a green electricity tariff with its energy supplier, renewable installations on campus including solar panels, air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. There are also ten electric vehicles as part of the University’s fleet.

Sustainability workshops to students and staff, and eco-friendly initiatives were also noted as great positive steps towards reducing carbon emissions.

Damion Shaw, Assistant Director of Facilities Management and Sustainability at Manchester Met, said: “Once again, we are delighted to have been recognised so highly as a leading university for sustainability. We are committed to progressing towards our carbon reduction targets and developing a sustainable campus. Key to this will be the ongoing engagement with our staff and students as they play a vital role in supporting the University to achieve its sustainability goals.”

Ben Gallizzi, Uswitch.com energy expert, added: “As thought leaders, it’s great to see so many universities taking charge of their sustainability through various actions.”

“From simple measures, such as choosing to receive their energy through renewable energy tariffs and offering recycling facilities, to implementing their own electric car fleets and installing renewable energy sources on campus. UK universities are approaching a greener way of being in a multifaceted way, understanding that every little helps when it comes to reducing carbon emissions.”

“And while not every university has the same resources, it’s good to see that almost all are willing to go green in some way or another. It’s a great example to set for students, staff, and the wider community.”

The ranking further endorses the University’s green credentials, which has ranked in the top three in the People and Planet University League since 2012.

Manchester Met also recently hosted a panel session on its work to support a green economy at the Greater Manchester Green Summit for the fifth year running on how to create and support the skills needed for a future green economy.
