Manchester Metropolitan will explore how Greater Manchester can develop the skills pipeline for a future green economy as part of the 2023 GM Green Summit.

Manchester Met is sponsoring the event, which takes place on 2 October 2023 at the Lowry Theatre at Salford Quays, for the fifth year.

As part of the Green Summit, the University will chair a panel session which will look at how the University works with employers, industry, and other education providers to support the future green economy, including how we can use solutions such as hydrogen.

The session will be chaired by Professor Liz Price, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability at Manchester Met. It will invite contributions from City leaders, people in business and graduates who are already one step ahead in re-imagining and delivering our future green workforce and economy.

As a leading sustainable University, Manchester Metropolitan is at the forefront of delivering a more sustainable future and contributing to the world’s sustainability agenda.

At last year’s Green Summit, we committed to delivering a pipeline of green skills that will prepare students for future careers when ‘all jobs will be green jobs.’

Greater Manchester has an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2038 and this commitment is a key focus for the University’s Leadership in Sustainability Strategy 2022 – 2026.

The Strategy focuses on ensuring education for sustainable development and climate change education are embedded in all our courses by 2026 and that we continue to deliver world-class research to tackle the issues around climate change, such as in aviation, nature-based solutions, climate resilience and developing hydrogen fuel.

In 2022, we also helped to launch the North West Net Zero Skills Charter, which is designed by Manchester Metropolitan University and its partners to help businesses harness new net zero opportunities for the benefit of communities and people across the region.

Commenting on Manchester Met’s involvement, Professor Liz Price, said: “The Green Summit is a crucial event. It gives people an outlet to talk about sustainability, share best practices, and agree on how the city region can meet its ambitious targets. Our hope is that delegates will leave the Green Summit feeling able to deliver on those solutions, empowered to be the change agents our region needs, and supported to take action.”

The 2023 GM Green Summit is free for anyone to attend or livestream.
