Sustainable and Healthy Buildings

We’ve installed photovoltaic arrays at our Students’ Union, All Saints building and Sir Kenneth Green library and generated over 73,000 kWh of energy. That’s equivalent to powering the average couple’s flat for four and a half years.

The most effective way we can reduce our overall running costs, and cut carbon emissions in our estate, is by constructing energy efficient buildings.

We’re already doing this by using innovative design principles, which mean our buildings respond effectively to the local climate and conditions, substantially cutting emissions, reducing waste and water use and saving money.

All our new building and construction work reaches the standards set by BREEAM Education excellence.

We’ve introduced Display Energy Certificates to show the energy used in 108 of our buildings.

Capital Projects and Refurbishments

The University is currently undertaking a major campus rationalisation, which will involve construction of several new buildings, the refurbishment of existing properties, and the disposal of unused assets.

Birley Fields

Our new Birley Fields Campus will become home to the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care, alongside the Institute of Education. As well as representing a fantastic opportunity to work towards zero carbon, water and waste impacts with the new campus, this exciting new development will also have a positive impact on the local community. Have a look at our campus proposals.

Art and Design building

Another major project that’s well underway is the Art & Design building. It’s due for completion in 2012 and is part of a £35m reorganisation of the Faculty.
