Teaching

Why do I teach?

I am passionate about the importance of quality early childhood education  and provision. I am committed to working with and developing excellent education and child care professionals who will be ready to enter the profession with confidence and equiped to make a significant contribution to the lived experiences of children now and in the future

How I’ll teach you

At undergraduate and postgraduate level I support the students’ critical examination of key concepts in childhood and youth studies which includes consideration of the changing social and cultural constructions
of childhood and young people and its impact on lived realities in diverse and differing contexts. For example the impact of the UNCRC (UN, 1989) is critically considered using in depth examinations of evidence from children’s and young people’s everyday lives emphasising the importance of meaningful
participation. The universalised idealisms of children’s rights and notions of place in a globalised world
are questioned. At the heart of my philosophy for teaching is a view that knowledge and meaning about ways in which children  learn and develop is co constructed in conversation with others and through discoursive practices.

My research expertise, gained through my study at doctoral level and through involvement in international education projects in Sri Lanka,Bulgaria, Finland, Italy, Holland and Spain, complements my well established
expertise in teaching, learning and assessment.
