Karen Varty

Karen joined Manchester Metropolitan University as Director of Recruitment and Admissions in October 2017, where she has oversight and responsibility for admissions, UK student recruitment and widening participation.

She has more than 20 years’ experience in Higher Education, having previously worked as Head of Academic Services for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester, prior to joining Manchester Met. Karen has also held roles across a number of other Professional Services teams in both central and Faculty/School roles and, before moving into Higher Education, she worked in a variety of posts within Further Education and for the Further Education Funding Council.

Karen has a number of years of board experience as a parent and co-opted school Governor at a primary school in Stockport where she was Chair of Finance and School Improvement, and Co-Chair of Governors.

Karen is a graduate in English History from the University of East Anglia and lives in Stockport with her husband and three children. In her spare time she enjoys running and bootcamp style fitness sessions.

Karen joined the Board of Governors as a Staff Governor on 1 April 2019 and is a member of the Nominations and Governance Committee.
