Professor Mark Sterling

Professor Mark Sterling was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and Engineering in February 2024.

Prior to this he worked at the University of Birmingham for almost 25 years where he held several senior positions including Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Interim Head of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Staffing, and Head of the School of Engineering. He is also a visiting research professor at Western University in Canada.

Mark is a Civil Engineer with an internationally recognised research portfolio in Wind Engineering. His current research interests focus on transient winds, particularly the effects of extreme winds on infrastructure, vehicles, and plants. He has also published over 120 peer reviewed journal and conference publications and a book on Train Aerodynamics and Applications.  His latest book examines academic career pathways and the role they can play in developing the twenty-first century Higher Education sector.

Mark is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Fellow of the Wind Engineering Society, a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
