  • Unit topics and delivery

LTA is taught online, with one optional face-to-face session. This unit allows learners the opportunity to develop their practice through critical reflection and contextual debates informed by relevant theories and perspectives. Participants will consider their own teaching practice in the context of the wider HE landscape, from both the teacher and learner perspective. The core topic areas include: Curriculum and Session Design; Inclusive Practice; Theory, Scholarship and CPD; and, Assessment and Feedback.

Through the unit your learning will comprise of the following approaches:

    • Attendance and engagement with live Teams teaching sessions.
    • Self-paced learning activities and resources on Moodle for each topic.
    • Reading – both general and subject/context-specific pedagogic literature.
    • Formative activities undertaken in your own context, which support your learning and build towards the summative Practice Journal assessment.
    • Observing others teach and being observed.
    • Contribution to discussions via the LTA Teams Space.
    • Keeping reflective notes as you progress through the unit.
  • Unit assessment

This unit is assessed by the completion of a Practice Journal (3200 – 4200 words): a structured, written, critical reflection on your teaching, aligned to the Professional Standards Framework (PSF). The LTA unit aligns to Descriptor 2 of the PSF, meaning that upon successful completion participants will be awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), as well as 30 Master’s level credits. Throughout the course of the unit participants will be expected to undertake a series of formative activities which inform the summative Practice Journal.

  • Entry requirements

To apply for this unit you must:

    • Teach regularly throughout the unit delivery.
    • Be involved in the design, planning and delivery of learning activities.
    • Assess and give feedback to learners.
    • Hold a degree (or equivalent).

If it emerges, during the course of the unit, that a participant isn’t meeting the requirements above, they will be withdrawn. If you have any further questions about the entry requirements, please contact Dr Sophie Bessant (S.Bessant@mmu.ac.uk).

    Observation of Practice

As part of the LTA unit you will be observed on your teaching practice. At least one observation must be completed by a colleague from the University teaching Academy. Further information about observations of practice will be provided at the start of the unit.
