Safah's Clearing story

I applied to Manchester Met to study Politics directly through Clearing, having not achieved my predicted A-level grades.

My Clearing story

Over summer, I had an inkling about not attaining my results but still hoped I would get into my insurance choice. On A-level results day I logged onto UCAS and at first felt shocked and angry about my results.

Luckily, I had attended Manchester Met’s open day, and my two older siblings had studied there so it was home-from-home for me. I decided it would be a good choice for me, so applied.

I visited the Clearing website, checked to see if the course was still open and called the Clearing helpline. Initially I was on hold, but after 15 minutes of my call being answered, I had a place. I was relieved and happy to have a place at Manchester Met. I received email confirmation shortly after so I immediately felt like I belonged at the University. I joined the politics Facebook group and got to know my course mates before I had even started!

My advice

Be confident and proud of your results no matter what they are. You probably worked very hard, and things have a way of working themselves out.

My student experience

I am enjoying my course. The tutors are very approachable, and outside of office hours they are always happy to help. This is important for me, and I’m sure their support will help my learning and overall degree outcome.

Jobs4Students is a fantastic scheme where you are paid for doing professional roles on campus. I am a Make a Difference Ambassador and Student Ambassador, and I’m really excited to support potential students. One year ago I was in their position, so it will be great to share my experience.

Why Manchester?

I love Manchester, it is such a vibrant city with great street culture. Being a Politics student, Manchester is brilliant for my course. It’s steeped in history, with the Suffragettes Movement and the Peoples History Museum. Being born and bred in Manchester, the political history has helped me learn about myself and where I am from. Manchester Met is a campus university while being located in the city centre, so you have the best of both worlds!
