Background

I completed an undergraduate philosophy degree at the University of Manchester. Due to COVID-19 completely disrupting my first, second and most of my third year I felt I had missed out on what university was all about. I wanted to continue studying in Manchester but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I had a look through the Manchester Met courses and decided a masters in international events management would be perfect for me. It was a course that wasn’t offered at the University of Manchester, so I decided to switch universities and continue learning with Manchester Met.

The course

I thoroughly enjoyed units in global issues in events, event sponsorship and marketing, international strategic event management and the research project. I particularly liked the creative aspects of these units and the freedom we were given to take the coursework in our own direction. The teaching style and support offered made the whole course fun and stress-free.

Support

There is a lot of support provided by course lecturers, leaders and support staff. There was never a moment that I thought I wasn’t getting enough support or couldn’t talk to anyone about any issues I was having. Tutors provided multiple one-to-one meetings and students could ask for them if they wanted them. Lecturers were continually asking for feedback to make their lecturers better and more engaging if necessary.

I would recommend Manchester Met due to the endless support, how it has enabled my confidence to grow and how much fun my time has been. This year has been by far my best year at university and it is all down to Manchester Met!

Career

I have gained many key skills and attributes that I will use going forward and apply to my internship. The creative event design and production unit provided many practical skills such as how to set up and work a PA system, produce risk assessments and much more.

Manchester

There is access to free fitness classes on campus and multiple activities offered every week. There are endless opportunities to meet new people outside of lectures. This was particularly helpful as there were only 16 people on my course. There are also loads of activities and clubs to join outside of University to meet like-minded people. There is always something to do in Manchester, so you’ll never get bored!

Tips for future students

  • I would advise that future students fully immerse themselves in the course as the more they engage the more they will get out of it.
  • Have fun and get creative. The whole course is designed for students to get imaginative and help us decide what aspects of event management we want to go into.
  • Attend all the one-to-one meetings and take advantage of all the help offered even if you don’t feel as though you need it. I underestimated how beneficial these meetings would be.
