A Professor of Mental Health has been made an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Professor Joy Duxbury is a nurse by background and began working in academia in 1995, becoming a professor in 2011.

She has built an international reputation, conducting and promoting research excellence in the fields of mental health, risk and social injustice working in acute mental health, forensic and criminal justice services, including the prison and police service.

Prof Duxbury joined Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care in April of 2018. She is a research lead in Mental Health for the University.

More recently, she has focused on minimising restrictive practices such as physical restraint and coercion in settings across health and social care, criminal justice and education.

Prof Duxbury is “delighted” to receive the honour, thanking colleagues for their role in the acknowledgement. She said: “This is a testament to the tireless work of many colleagues, experts by experience and organisations who have supported me to make a real difference to the lives of those who experience mental health challenges. I am proud to accept this accolade on their behalf.”

Prof Duxbury’s primary research focus is to reduce reliance on restrictive practices by sharing learning and developing quality standards and practical tools.

She is a board member and previous chair for the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group (EViPRG) and currently chairs the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN).

Her expertise and research has contributed to a number of national guidance documents for the Department of Health (DoH) and NICE. She has spoken at plenary keynotes and secured honorary positions in organisations around the globe. In February this year, she was awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Fellowship, one of only ten awarded nationally every year.
