On 18th December the Research Centre for Musculoskeletal Science & Sports Medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University had its annual PhD student paper competition that was supported by 'Experimental Physiology'.

The external reviewers wrote ‘This was a really difficult task as all the papers were excellent and had merit in their own right.’

The first prize (£200) went to Anselme Guy Mpaka Messa, working with DoS Hans Degens and supervisor Jamie McPhee for his paper:

MESSA, G. A. M., PIASECKI, M., HILL, C., MCPHEE, J. S., TALLIS, J. & DEGENS, H. 2019. Morphological alterations of mouse skeletal muscles during early ageing are muscle specific. Exp Gerontol, 125, 110684.

The second prize (£150) went to Paul William Hendrickse, working with DoS Hans Degens and supervisor Emma Hodson-Tole for his paper:

HENDRICKSE, P., GALINSKA, M., HODSON-TOLE, E. & DEGENS, H. 2018. An evaluation of common markers of muscle denervation in denervated young-adult and old rat gastrocnemius muscle. Exp Gerontol, 106, 159-164.

The third prize (£120) went to Aron Teklemariam, working with DoS Emma Hodson-Tole and supervisor Neil Reeves for his paper:

TEKLEMARIAM, A., HODSON-TOLE, E. F., REEVES, N. D., COSTEN, N. P. & COOPER, G. 2016. A Finite Element Model Approach to Determine the Influence of Electrode Design and Muscle Architecture on Myoelectric Signal Properties. PLoS One, 11, e0148275.

The prizes were made possible by ‘Experimental Physiology’.
