New international research project aims to prevent food waste in Colombia and Peru
A new project involving academics from the Busines Transformations research centre is underway to support food waste prevention in Colombia and Peru. The project ‘Strengthening collaborative food waste prevention in Colombia and Peru: towards responsible production and consumption (Collares)’ is funded through the QR Global Challenges Research Fund which supports research that addresses challenges faced by developing countries.
The Collares project is a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University, Universidad Nacional Jorge Basadre Grohmann (Tacna, Peru), Universidad Privada del Norte (Lima, Peru), Universidad EAFIT (Medellin, Colombia) and the social enterprise Sinba (Lima, Peru). The research aims to contribute towards more resilient enterprise and sustainable food systems in Colombia and Peru.
Led by Dr Adrian Morley and Professor Alberto Paucar-Caceres from the Business Transformations research centre, alongside Valeria Vargas from Manchester Met’s Ecology and Environment research centre, the project’s objectives are
- To investigate current food resource management challenges experienced by HaFS (Hospitality and Food Services) in Peru and Colombia
- To facilitate stakeholder awareness about the importance of cutting back on food waste
- To boost food waste redistribution efforts in the respective cities
The work is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Specifically, the project will address ‘Global Food Loss and Waste’ (SDG Indicator 12.3) which aims to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses by 2030.
