Our Place, Your Story – bringing the history of Manchester Met to life through alumni memories.

Our Place, Your Story
Our Place, Your Story

2024 marks Manchester Metropolitan University's 200th anniversary. Throughout the year, we are inviting you to join us in celebrating 200 years of driving innovation and transforming lives in Manchester and around the world.

To celebrate our origins in 1824 right through to today, we are running a special campaign to ensure a vital part of our history, and the life of our university, is captured for future generations of our community to see and enjoy - the memories of former students.

We are inviting our alumni to participate in our celebrations by sharing memories of your time with us at Manchester Metropolitan University, or one of our legacy institutions.

We want to bring our history to life – by sharing our place in your story, you can be part of that.

To mark this celebration, memories collected will be deposited in our Special Collections Museum, ensuring that future generations of students, staff and alumni know what it was like to be a student here, as told by you.

We welcome memories from all eras, decades, campuses, and subjects. Whether your memory is about studying for your final exams, playing for your favourite sports team, time spent in halls, digs, or societies (or the celebrations afterwards), we want to hear about it!

If you would like to take part in Our Place, Your Story, please complete our online form here.

For more information about the campaign, please see our below. If your question isn’t answered here, get in touch at alumni@mmu.ac.uk.

About the Campaign

Our new-style form

Why do I need to fill out a form before submitting my memory?
We want to make sure all memories are associated with exactly the right person, so we do take details along with the memory. This is also a great opportunity to refresh your record – making sure we know how to contact you with future communications, events and opportunities.

Do I have to create an account to submit my memory?
Our new-style form for 2024 means that you can register for an account with us, so that next time you come to update your details, you can log in, see what we already hold from last time, and only fill out the changes you need to. This is true whether you are submitting a memory, or simply updating your details with us. Whilst it isn’t mandatory to register for an account, it is recommended so that you can always see what your record details look like.

I registered for an account and logged in, but my memory box is blank! Do I have to fill it out again?
No! This part of the form is enabled to be filled out multiple times if you so wish, so it reverts to blank when you log in. If you wish to double check that your original memory has been received, you can email us alumni@mmu.ac.uk and we can confirm this for you.

Can I submit my memory in another way besides the online form?
Yes – whilst we encourage you to use the form provided, you can also send your memory to us at alumni@mmu.ac.uk. If you require a further option, please get in touch.

Alumni Community

Can I submit on behalf of another alum?
We would need their consent to do so, and we would always encourage the alum to get in touch directly, however if this is inaccessible to someone, we will do everything to help – get in touch at alumni@mmu.ac.uk.

Can I submit on behalf of another alum (who has passed away)?
We cannot accept update forms for alumni who have passed away. Depending on the connection to the deceased alum – if it can be fully verified e.g. family member, get in touch alumni@mmu.ac.uk, and we might be able to accept the memory in another way.

Can I submit anonymously?
We would still need to connect your memory to your record and would need some details to do so, but we can ensure that your memory is not publicly connected to your details if used on social media, if you would prefer this.

General information

Where will my memory be stored/used?
We will store your memory as part of your Manchester Met alumni record – which you can update at any time here. Memories will also be deposited in our Special Collections Museum. Whilst we endeavour to capture and preserve as many memories as possible, we do reserve the right to moderate as appropriate. Please see the alumni and supporter data protection statement for more information.

Can I retract my memory from the campaign and future use?
Yes – contact us alumni@mmu.ac.uk and we can do the rest.

How will I know if my memory is being used on social media or the website?
We will contact you directly if we wish to use your memory in these ways, to make sure you are happy for us to do this. We will contact you in good time so you can enjoy sharing it when released, to encourage other alumni to join in the campaign.

Is my memory worth sending to you?
We look forward to receiving all of your memories, as they will provide an important insight into student life through the years. As mentioned above, we do reserve the right to moderate as appropriate.
