DENTAL Technology graduates have been making faces for a new Channel 5 Documentary series which airs this Autumn.

The ‘Making faces’ programme looks at the work of the Maxillofacial Prosthetic Department at a hospital in Birmingham as they rebuild the faces of patients who have deformities or have had an accident or an illness.

And five of the six prosthetists who work in the department are MMU graduates.

According to programme makers, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham was chosen because the hospital’s elite team are ‘the busiest and best prosthetics experts in the country’.

Proud

Manager and consultant maxillofacial prosthetist Steve Worrollo, Principal Prosthetists, Stefan Edmundson and James Dimond and Prosthetists Hitesh Joria and Claire Cooper all studied at the Centre for Dental Technology.

And trainee prosthethists Taranjit Gidda and Holly Turner are also MMU graduates.

Principal lecturer in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Technology, Chris Maryan remembers teaching all of them during their time here at MMU.

He said: “It makes me very proud to see so many of my ex-students featured in this programme – nearly all of the staff in the programme have studied here which is great for the department.

Important work

“Dental technology is a hugely important profession but perhaps not as high profile as some of the other health professions.

"There are only 200 of us in the profession and two universities that teach this discipline in the country so it’s great to have a television programme about the profession.”

The Centre for Dental Technology belongs to the Department of Life Sciences, Head Bill Gilmore said: “This is a tremendous showcase for Healthcare Science and the important work we do."

The Department of Life Sciences at MMU and the School of Dentistry at Kings College are developing a new joint Master of Science degree in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Technology. The new course is planned to start in September 2013.

The four part series is broadcast on Channel 5 on Thursday nights at 9pm and started on September 20th.
