Eminent figures receive honorary degrees 2002

Playwright, judge and baking boss honoured by Vice-Chancellor

PLAYWRIGHT Jack Rosenthal, best known for Coronation Street and London's Burning has been awarded an honorary degree from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Judge Dame Janet Smith, head of the Shipman Inquiry, and Jonathan Warburton, head of the baking giant also received honorary degrees.

The ceremony took place at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on Tuesday, July 9 in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, University Governors and the Chancellor, His Grace, the Duke of Westminster.

Jack Rosenthal has been one of the finest writers in British television over the past 40 years. He wrote the very first storylines in Coronation Street, writing 129 episodes alongside Tony Warren. His CV, one described as "awesome" includes Bar Mitzvah Boy, The Evacuees, and Sunday night favourite London's Burning which was inspired by stories told to him by his daughter's fireman boyfriend.

Links with the University are via the The Writing School, where his friend Tony Warren is a fellow, and also through teaching visits to help TV production students.

Dame Janet Smith was born in Stockport and practised law in Manchester for 20 years. She became a QC in 1986 and High Court Judge in 1992.

She had won many plaudits for her handling of the Shipman Inquiry which began in Manchester last year and concludes later this month.

Like many at MMU's large School of Law, Dame Janet began her legal career as a mature student.

She said: "Never having been to university makes my receiving this award all the more special."

Jonathan Warburton is chairman-elect of Bolton-based Warburtons - the household name bakery, family-owned for 125 year with an annual turnover of £200m.

Warburtons have connections with MMU through our strong food science research and consultancy base, particularly the North West Advanced Food Systems Centre, which is which acts as an important network for the region's biggest industry - food and drink.
