Engineering ambassador opportunities
We are looking to recruit nine volunteer engineers to act as ambassadors on an exciting outreach project, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering's Ingenious awards.
Ambassador information
What we provide
You’ll be supported by undergraduate student outreach ambassadors from Manchester Met.
We’ll provide holistic training in sharing stories and engineering passion to deliver creative public engagement activities for primary school children and teachers.
Dr Allen and Ms Mandhani will lead the training with support from members of the project team, who are connected to the Sports Engineering Research Group. Primary education specialists from Manchester Met will also support the training.
You’ll receive resources to take into the schools and personalise your story. This will help with job interviews, bringing in contracts and applying for funding throughout your career.
As mentors on the project, we’ll also help you work toward professional registration. The experience gained can be used as evidence of the key competencies required to obtain engineering chartership.
Your commitment
Between April and June 2023 you’ll attend a training session at Manchester Met. You’ll then visit the same Manchester school on three separate occasions to run workshops – helping students design structures to use in shoes.
We’ll hold a celebration day at the University, where the children will test their structures and visit our laboratories. Finally, you’ll follow up with the teachers, and explore your options to continue sharing your engineering experience with the school.
How to apply
You’ll need to describe your background and summarise your experience of:
- working with children
- communication
- listening
- storytelling
- social media in public engagement
- evaluating public engagement
- safeguarding
The training you receive during the programme will further develop your skills and knowledge in these areas.
