Ambassador information

As an ambassador, you’ll visit schools to champion engineering and inspire the next generation of engineers. You’ll simultaneously learn and teach year five children how smart materials, such as metamaterials, are used in sport shoes.

We’ll equip you to become an engineering champion, giving you skills and tools to engage the public. Within a supportive network, you’ll develop your communication and presentation skills, learning how to discuss your work with non-engineers.

What we provide

You’ll be supported by undergraduate student outreach ambassadors from Manchester Met.

We’ll provide holistic training in sharing stories and engineering passion to deliver creative public engagement activities for primary school children and teachers.

Dr Allen and Ms Mandhani will lead the training with support from members of the project team, who are connected to the Sports Engineering Research Group. Primary education specialists from Manchester Met will also support the training.

You’ll receive resources to take into the schools and personalise your story. This will help with job interviews, bringing in contracts and applying for funding throughout your career.

As mentors on the project, we’ll also help you work toward professional registration. The experience gained can be used as evidence of the key competencies required to obtain engineering chartership.

Your commitment

Between April and June 2023 you’ll attend a training session at Manchester Met. You’ll then visit the same Manchester school on three separate occasions to run workshops – helping students design structures to use in shoes.

We’ll hold a celebration day at the University, where the children will test their structures and visit our laboratories. Finally, you’ll follow up with the teachers, and explore your options to continue sharing your engineering experience with the school.
