Freida Ravi Kumar

What sparked your interest in engineering?

Engineering is the application of science and math to reduce human effort or interference and increase productivity to solve issues. From a very young age, I have always been fascinated to discover techniques that could produce quick and effective solutions to problems. My interest started with my introduction to computers, fixing home appliances with my family, and travelling in an aircraft for the first time and observing how this amazing human invention could allow us to travel from A to B in such a quick and safe manner.

Outside of the course teaching, what other opportunities did you get involved in during your time at Manchester Met?

I undertook an internship with Bosch Lawn and Garden during my degree. I also worked as a Student Ambassador, providing support during open and visit days as well as working with the International Team. These experiences helped me develop my communication and team working skills, along with my confidence.

What are your greatest achievements so far?

My greatest achievement is my ability to adapt to different situations and achieve all of my goals, such as coming from a family where pursuing education was not mandatory and studying a subject where I one of the female students, as well as leaving home and living in a new country and making it my home for so many years.

What advice would you give to students who aspire to a career in Engineering?

If it excites you and sparks a passion in you to help produce solutions that make human effort or issues minimal, you should definitely go for it.

Engineering is a great industry to go into with so many different routes to pursue. My dissertation at Manchester Met was about the risk and rupture of intracranial aneurysms, which combined Medical Science and Computational Engineering to help patients and doctors understand risks and ruptures in greater depth. Engineering is great due to its diversity with everything always uses some aspect of Engineering in it.
