Can you tell us about your Engineering Journey?

My curiosity about sporting equipment along with my love for sport led to me pursuing Sports Engineering. There is an aspect of Engineering in everything I do, so it’s a perfect way to merge my work and passion.

After my undergraduate degree, I worked as a Design Engineer and after my postgraduate degree, I became a Test Engineer for the International Tennis Federation.

I am currently a Research at Manchester Met. My focus is on material testing and computer simulation of injuries in rugby and what I’m working on right now will help change the regulations on padded clothing in the sport. When I have submitted my thesis here, I will be carrying out research for the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

From the skills gained during your time at Manchester Met, which have you used most in your career so far?

The ability to present my research to a variety of audiences. I have assisted with lectures and tutorials, helping to guide students in laboratories. I’ve also taken the opportunity to present my research to the general public through Outreach programmes.

What advice would you give to students who aspire to a career in Engineering?

Always be ready to learn and question things at every step of your journey. Once you understand the ‘why’ behind what you’re taught, you’ll never forget it.

What does diversity in Engineering mean to you?

To me, diversity in Engineering means being able to change the norm and challenge the limits, no matter what your background is. Diversity in Engineering is important, as it provides different perspectives. Sometimes all you need to solve a problem is a different pair of eyes. Someone with a different outlook might be a great Engineer.
