My profile

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education and Community. I teach on the BA in Education Studies and I will be course coordinator for the BA in Religion, Education and Community.

My area of expertise is the relationship between schools and communities, in particular how schools seek to meet the needs of families classed as vulnerable or disadvantaged. Theoretically, I use socially critical perspectives and I have a keen interest in policy studies. Methodologically, I mainly use ethnographic, longitudinal approaches and have expertise in case studies, carrying out interviews with families and young people.

Presently, I am Co-PI for an Evaluation of Stockport Social Care Innovation Programme, subcontracted by TNS BRMB through funding secured from DfE. Using a theory of change approach, we will be tracking the reorganisation of Health and Social Care across Stockport over a two-year period. Intellectually, we are seeking to understand organisational change at a time of rapid reform in public services and, in particular, the adoption of restorative approaches and their impact upon vulnerable families.

I am also part of the team for an EU Horizon 2020 project, ‘PARTISPACE’ investigating the styles and spaces of how young people participate in their communities and in society across eight countries. I will mainly be contributing to WP4, compiling local case study data of how 15-30 year-olds engage with the public in formal, non-formal and informal youth-based settings.

Previously, I worked on an Evaluation of School Direct, a new employment-based Initial Teacher Training route. The project consisted of over one hundred interviews with university-based teacher educators, mentors and trainee teachers across twenty institutions and twelve schools. I also worked on a National College project, developing capability and capacity in Evidence-Based Teaching across twenty Teaching School Alliances.

I was awarded my PhD in 2013 from the The University of Manchester. During this time I also gained experience of working as a Research Assistant at the National Union of Students and the Institute of Public Policy Research. Prior to this, I was a secondary school teacher, ChildLine counsellor and youth worker.
