Impact

The HBA and Forced Marrage Roadshow 2018 culminated in a presentation to Parliament and the House of Lords on the Roadshow’s findings in January 2019. The purpose of the presentation was to provide impact and influence on policy development in the area, with the view towards providing improved intervention and protection to victims and survivors.

The HBA and the Courts Project 2023 is a culmination of online surveys and empirical interviews with key stakeholders in the field, all with the aim of providing impact on policies, procedures and laws to improve prosecution and conviction rates in the criminal courts, and to reduce discontinuance in both criminal and family law cases concerneing HBA and forced marriages.

Teaching

Why do I teach?

Maz enjoys teaching very much. He enjoys exchanging ideas and seeing students develop and prosper. He finds nothing more satisfying than seeing students have their “light-bulb” moments. Maz is also very supportive of those who belong to minority or disadvantaged backgrounds.

How I’ll teach you

Maz will ask you to think critically about the subjects and issues that he teachs. He will ask you to contribute to discussions and will seek to challenge any preconceived ideas that you may have had about studying law.

Why study…

By studying law and criminal justice-based modules at MMU, you will join a vibrant and enthusiastic course that allows you to approach a number of subjects from socio-legal perspectives. Maz, and his colleagues, take a socio-legal approach to teaching and research and teach contemporary topics such as forced marriages, honour-based violence, sentencing of defendants, treatment of victims, terrorism and the law.

One of the benefits of our modules is that they are taught by a team of experts consisting of criminologists, lawyers and sociologists.

Research outputs

Dr. Maz completed his PhD at Anglia Ruskin University on the subject of ‘Honour’-Based Violence in Ethnic communities in England and Wales (2018). His external examiner was Professor Lynn Welchman, of SOAS.

Maz has a wide research interest and his main publications to date focus on violence against women, honour-based abuse and forced marriages. He has recently begun to research male victims of honour-based abuse, forced marriages and domestic abuse, where perpetrators may be either male or female.

Grants

November 2018, £1,000 ESRC Grant - ’21st Century Man’ Conference, MMU.

In February 2018, Maz (along with Dr. Annapurna Waughray) was awarded an internal grant by RKE (£5,500) to deliver a series of Roadshows across the country on HBV and forced marriages. The Roadshow will culminate with a presentation in Parliament, where Maz, Annapurna and Rani Bilkhu (of Jeena Charity) will present their findings to the House of Lords (October 2018), with a view towards improving support, intervention and protection for victims and survivors.
