Biography

Sarah is a Chartered Psychologist and before joining MMU in January 2010 as a senior lecturer was employed as a psychologist at the Health and Safety Laboratory. In her practitioner career, she led and worked across a range of applied research and consultancy projects addressing topics such as violence and bullying at work; work-related stress; training needs analyses in different industries; and occupational health and safety culture and climate. She also has experience as a consultant in the HR and HRD field specialising in resilience and mental toughness and leadership training.

Sarah is a full member of the Centre for Decent Work and Productivity. Her research and teaching interests span a number of work streams concerned with optimising decent work and strengthening employee health and well-being. They specifically involve stress, emotions and well-being in alternative types of employment; understanding identity challenges and well-being impacts; examining the management of mental health at work; evaluating experiences of good employment; and exploring the links between HR practices and performance outputs. Sarah is very interested in emergent qualitative methods in work psychology.

She holds a BSc (hons), an MSc and a PhD from the University of Manchester. Sarah is a fellow of the HEA and an academic member of the CIPD. She holds chartered membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS), The European Academy of Work and Organisational Psychology (EAWOP), and the British Academy of Management (BAM).

She is co-chair of the BAM Organizational Psychology special interest group (from Jan 2023, previously secretary and treasurer), and is a consulting editor on the editorial board of the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.

Sarah is also engaged as an academic expert for the Centre for Progressive Policy’s Inclusive Growth Network where she is chairing a national working group to share learning in the development of good employment initiatives.

Sarah is interested in supervising PhD students in the areas of workplace well-being and stress; identity at work; and the development of decent work and good employment. She is especially interested in the application of emergent and innovative qualitative methods in work psychology

Impact

Sarah has worked on a range of impactful research projects during her time at MMU. She is currently leading a programme of work with Greater Manchester Combined Authority to explore the evaluation and impact of the introduction of the Good Employment Charter. She is working with the Centre for Progressive Policy’s Inclusive Growth Network as an academic expert and is to chair a national working group to share learning and good practice in the development of good employment initiatives. Her work on the evaluation of the good employment charter was chosen as part of GM’s  ‘spotlight month’ for the network, where a blog, workshop and further resources were provided to optimise learning across different local and combined authorities engaged in the development of good employment charters or similar initiatives CPP | Learning from Greater Manchester’s Good Employment Charter (progressive-policy.net)

Sarah’s work with Professor Carol Atkinson also contributed towards a REF impact case study that addressed bringing about positive changes to workplace terms and conditions for the health and social care workforce.

Teaching

Sarah uses her background in occupational psychology to teach across a range of postgraduate units. She leads on the design and delivery of the new applied research project unit on the postgraduate MSc in HRM

Supervision

Sarah has supervised 5 PhD students to successful completion and supervises a further 6 students at various stages of their PhD journey.

She is especially interested in supervising MSc and PhD research studies on well-being and stress at work; unfair treatment and discrimination; mental health at work; and identity management.
