Biography

Lawrence has worked in academia for almost 25 years and has held roles at University of Manchester, Oxford University, Manchester Business School, Central St Martins College of Art and Design, and Birmingham City University.  He is an active researcher and recently returned to Manchester (Metropolitan University) from Birmingham where he held the posts of Director of Research: Art and Design and acting Associate Dean: Research and Innovation.  Alongside publishing more than 70 reports, papers and articles, Lawrence has been involved in the design, leadership and delivery of 25 major funded research projects (with a combined income in excess of £15m) for clients including UK Research Councils, the UK Treasury, the European Commission, Innovate UK, British Council and Nesta.  An active doctoral supervisor, examiner and reviewer, Lawrence has guided 15 candidates to successful defence of their thesis.  He was Site Director for the AHRC M3C Doctoral Training Partnership and is a reviewer for the R&D Management Association’s doctoral support programme.  Lawrence’s core areas of research include innovation, creativity and strategy.  In addition to his academic work, Lawrence is active in music-based creative practice with interests in arrangement, production and performance.
