My profile

Biography

As Research Lead for the Department of Natural Sciences I am responsible for leading and supporting a group of researchers dedicated to conserving our natural resources through the promotion of more sustainable development.

At a Faculty level I also support the strategic development of our external engagement activity designed to enhance the reputation and impact of the University.

I represent the University on Manchester City Council’s Zero Carbon Advisory Group and am Chair of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s Sustainable Consumption and Production Challenge Group.

Interests and expertise

I am interested in the relationship between economic activity and the environment and have dedicated my career in supporting organisations to enhance their sustainability.

My research is primarily concerned with corporate responsibility and includes work on technology development, waste management, stakeholder engagement, noise communication and management, sustainability reporting and carbon management and accounting. Most recently I was Manchester Met’s lead academic on the €7.4 million H2020 project ANIMA (www.anima.eu) and am currently involved in a project at Gatwick Airport funded by the UK Civil Aviation Authority focusing on how to enhance the social acceptability of changes resulting from the current programme of Airspace Modernisation.

Impact

Our work with airports to enhance noise and carbon management was considered to have outstanding impact in REF2021, details of which can be found at the link below.

Teaching

My wider commitments limit the time available for teaching, but I continue to make contributions to 2nd and Final modules on The Sustainability of Organisations and Environmental Impact Assessment taken by students on the undergraduate programmes below.

Supervision

I also supervise PhD students with the following completions in recent years.

Research outputs

My research focuses on the promotion of more sustainable business activity with a particular focus on aviation. Our work with airports over the last twenty years has helped reduce their environmental impact through:

  • the development and adaptation of more comprehensive carbon accounting and management practices; and
  • informing more effective approaches to noise management that place noise-affected citizens at the centre of communication and decision-making procedures
