Peer Support

We offer all first year students who have a disability, health condition or dyslexia the opportunity to meet with current disabled students to access peer support at group meetings and social events.

This can help new students with the transition to university and provide them with additional practical advice and support, based on the experiences of other disabled students.

Listening to the student experiences was extremely valuable“

How do I find out about meetings?

The Disability Service contact all prospective and first year students by email to invite them to peer support meetings. These start before enrolment week and continue through the autumn term.

All of the meetings were interesting and informative

How do I become a mentor?

We recruit current students who have a disability, health condition or specific learning difficulty to act as mentors once each academic year (usually in the summer term) to provide advice and support to new students over the summer and during the autumn term. There are a number of benefits of becoming a mentor including:

  • Training sessions to fully prepare you for the role
  • A certificate of participation
  • Enhanced employability skills, such as communication, leadership and organisational skills, that will look good on your CV
  • The chance to attend group mentoring meetings and social events with other students
  • The opportunity to lead group meetings and train new mentors
