Kerry Patton

I am a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Senior Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy (HEA)) and Certified Business & Management Educator (CMBE). Over the course of my career, I have worked within banking, accountancy practice, the construction industry, the not-for-profit sector and the public sector. I specialised in the management of financial systems and training.

I joined MMU Business School in August 2013 and I lecture on various professional and undergraduate courses.
I am also an Assessor and Marking Team Leader for the ACCA professional paper SBR (Int), Strategic Business Reporting (International).

Words of wisdom

My core specialisms are financial accounting/reporting and financial systems.  In these subjects, practice is everything.  You can’t learn financial accounting and reporting properly by just attending lectures and reading books.  The only way to get a really good understanding of the subject is to do lots and lots of question practice.

This helps you to apply the theory, rather than just knowing about it!

Other academic service (administration and management)

I am the Deputy Head of the Finance & Economics department and Unit Leader/Lecturer for the Digital Skills for Business Professionals unit (Level 5).  In my time at Manchester Met, I have also held the roles of Year Tutor and Personal Tutor.  I specialise in teaching using technology and mentor colleagues on this.

Community, charity and NGO links

I am a Trustee & Honorary Treasurer for a small charity.  I am also Chair of Governors at my local primary school. 

Prizes and awards

I was shortlisted for the 2017 Lecturer of the Year at the PQ Magazine awards.  Attending the presentation evening was a great experience!

I was shortlisted for the Outstanding Innovation in Teaching MMU Staff award in 2014 and nominated for the Teaching Excellence MMU Staff award in 2021.
