Biography

Dr Roula Michaelides is the Subject Group Leader for Project Management and Business Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Roula holds a PhD in Project Management from the University of Liverpool and is a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She comes from a computing and information systems background and diversified into the Social Sciences and Operations Management in early-2000s.

Her research work is influential and continues to advance cutting edge ideas, thought leadership and new methodological approaches for studying social and collaborative complexity of projects. This is evidenced by the invitations to organise and co-organise symposia/ Professional Development Workshops for distinguished international conferences such as the Academy of Management (AoM) and the British Academy of Management (BAM). Roula regularly Chairs sessions and organise thematic streams in conferences and other workshops to support development of research ideas with researchers as well as executives and policy-makers.

Her research extends theoretical concepts from organisation and operations studies looking at organisational practices and capabilities relating to agility, ambidexterity, exploration, exploitation as well as relational complexity within projects, informal networks and their impact of network structures, particularly in relation to project/operations management and sustainability oriented innovation.

Roula has successfully secured external research funding, both as principal investigator and co-investigator, and has sustained a strong portfolio of grants from 2007 of significant value. More recently she is the MMU principle investigator of a successful EU Marie Sklodowska Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Horizon 2020 Work Programme, 2017-2021 “Being Lean and Seen: meeting the challenges of delivering projects successfully in the 21st century”. In addition Roula was the Principle Investigator of a Research Study, funded by the PMI “ Project Management as a Dynamic Collaborative Social Practice: Collaborative Innovation Revisited “ 2014-2017.

Further to the research grants Roula has also generated contract KE research both as a principal investigator or co-investigator ( e.g. contract research by NHS- Northwest Procurement Development (NWPD) looking at “Value Based Procurement in NHS” that has led to joining the SCAN Health Network)

Her work is published widely in leading international journals, book chapters, conference presentations, invited keynote speeches/guest lectures/presentations, expert interviews and articles.
