What's on in May

Whilst you are studying for your exams and assessments, it’s important to remember that taking regular breaks is encouraged and also good for you.  

Resting allows you to reset and boost your energy levels, meaning you can come back to your studies feeling refreshed. What better way to unwind than getting out and about in Manchester? 

Need some inspiration? Here’s some of the events taking place in Manchester in May: 

Top events in Manchester to wind down during your assessments 

1. Great Manchester Run  

Show some support for Team Orange runners and cheer them on from the side-line. You will be able to watch the action from anywhere along the route and you may even spot some of your lecturers or fellow students along the way! 

When: 26 May  

Where: Manchester City Centre 

2. Zone Out 

Zone Out Week is the perfect opportunity to unwind between your assessments with arts and crafts, fitness classes, and mindfulness sessions. From Monday 13  to Thursday 16 May, there will be plenty of events to get involved in with your friends and even freebies for you to take away. Make the most of this week by registering your interest now and support your physical health and mental wellbeing.

3. Manchester Flower Festival 

See in the summer at The Manchester Flower Festival. With floral installations dotted around the city, live music and entertainment planned, you can expect a fun and vibrant long weekend celebration. This event is free and open to all, and the perfect opportunity to explore Manchester. There will be 10 professionally designed displays to be discovered, all themed around ‘Manchester Icons’. 

When: Friday 24 – Monday 27 May 

Where: Manchester City Centre 

4. Sixes Cricket 

Sixes has turned the sport of cricket into a quick, fun, social competition!  Challenge your friends to get the highest score whilst you enjoy a drink (soft or alcoholic). These indoor batting cages are a great way to release some energy and catch up with friends during your assessment season. You must have at least two people for a booking so you can invite a friend along, and prices start at £7 during off-peak hours! 

When: Open Tuesday – Sunday 

Where: Corn Exchange 

5. Hip Hop Orchestra Brunch 

Chill out with some Hip Hop tunes and enjoy a drink or even a bite at the vibey Blues Kitchen. Known for its funky atmosphere, this bar doubles as a live music venue showcasing some of the best talent across Manchester! Tickets start at £10 with optional add-ons to enjoy food or unlimited drinks. Grab some friends and enjoy the atmosphere! 

When: Every Saturday 11:45 – 4pm 

Where: Blues Kitchen 

6. Manchester Jazz Festival 

Sticking with the music theme, May is the month of the Manchester Jazz Festival! With over a week of events around the city centre at various price points, and plenty of free choices, there is lots to get involved in. From walking tours to live music performances, you will definitely find a reason to get outside and recharge with some good tunes. 

When: 17 – 26 May 

Where: Events across Manchester City Centre 

7. Team Sport Go-Karting  

If thrill-seeking is your thing, why not wind down by speeding up a go kart around this 550-metre course! With 15 exhilarating bends and speeds up to 40mph, you can race your friends and burn off some energy on the track. There are also some chilled-out areas for those who want to watch, or for a pitstop catch-up after the race. What’s not to love with a student discount on the total cost included! 

When: Open 7 Days a week 

Where: AO Arena
