We provide a range of flexible options for one-to-one support that is accessible for all enrolled students.

Academic and Study Skills Tutors can help you develop a whole range of academic and study skills, and certain technologies to support your learning. This includes, but is not restricted to, helping you to plan your first assignment and improve your time management or presentation skills, and providing feedback on your written drafts.

No query is too small and there is no such thing as a silly question. We offer advice and support through one-to-one appointments, or by answering your questions via email or telephone.

One-to-one Study Skills appointments

You can book a 30-minute one-to-one appointment with an Academic and Study Skills Tutor to discuss developing your skills, or to focus in more detail on your assignment. Appointments are available either in person or virtually, via Microsoft Teams, depending on your preference.

Your Academic and Study Skills Tutor can provide advice and strategies on a range of topics, for example, critical thinking, managing your time effectively, or incorporating evidence into paragraphs.

To book an appointment, please contact us by emailing studyskills@mmu.ac.uk or phoning 0161 247 3330. To get the most from your one-to-one session, you may want to consider the following:

  • How can I prepare for my one-to-one appointment?
  • Can I bring the assignment I am writing to discuss?
  • I would like an appointment now, and another next week. Can I book both at the same time?

In person appointments

For safety of both you and staff we also advise the following steps to be taken:

  • You should not attend the appointment if you are feeling unwell or have any covid related symptoms.
  • Contact us on 0161 247 3330 or via email (studyskills@mmu.ac.uk) and your appointment can either be changed to an online appointment or can be rearranged for when you are feeling better.
  • How can I prepare for my one-to-one appointment?

Before any meeting or appointment, it’s useful to think about what you want to talk about and hope to get out of the experience. If you haven’t taken time to reflect beforehand, it can be difficult to know where to begin, and you may find that you spend valuable time during the session trying to figure out and explain exactly what you want.

You may already have some idea of what you want to discuss, but if you’re unsure, you could consider the following questions and write down some notes:

    • What aspect(s) of my assignment / studies do I want support with?
    • What is my priority for this appointment?
    • What do I want to achieve by the end of the appointment?

By taking a short time to prepare and reflect on these questions, skimming through previous feedback or reviewing your assignment brief, you can ensure that you get the most out of your 30-minute appointment.

If you try this but you still feel unsure about where to begin, don’t panic! We can help you figure this out during your appointment and arrange a follow-up if needed.

  • Can I bring the assignment I am writing to discuss?

Yes! You can bring your written assignment to discuss.

Have your document ready on your computer/device or printed out before the appointment. It is a good idea to select a specific section to focus on, as it may not be possible to look through your whole assignment in detail.

If you want more detailed feedback on a written assignment, you could consider our writing feedback service. Written feedback can always be followed-up with an email, phone call or one-to-one appointment if you feel this will be helpful.

  • I would like an appointment now, and another next week. Can I book both at the same time?

Although you are welcome to use our services as many times as you need, we cannot make bookings for subsequent appointments until the first has been completed.

The idea is that you will then have chance to work on the advice given in the first session before coming back again. This should give you a better idea of whether another appointment is needed, and what the focus of this appointment should be.

Don’t forget you can contact us by email if you want to follow up or double check something after your appointment!

MATHS AND STATS SUPPORT

If you have a query relating to maths or statistics, then you can contact us via e-mail. Tutors can provide e-mail advice, or signpost you to further resources/sources of support: studyskills@mmu.ac.uk

  • How can I prepare for my one-to-one maths and stats appointment?

    • Bring with you any example questions you would like to discuss with appropriate support material i.e. lecture notes, tutorial sets.
    • The appointment is fully utilised when you have made an attempt of a question first; the tutor can then work together with you to find exactly what needs improving to overcome any ‘sticking’ points.
    • If it is a long piece of work then it is beneficial to submit your work via email for the tutor to look over first. This can be emailed to studyskills@mmu.ac.uk with ‘Numeracy Work for 1:1’ in the subject line.
