Big Data Centre

Big Data brings together crime, health and multiple data to help us gain a better understanding of the drivers of social problems and to identify the potential of integrated solutions.

The Crime  & Well-Being Big Data Centre is a cross-Faculty initiative at Manchester Metropolitan University.

We consist of a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in criminology, urban studies, geography, transport (and associated social science disciplines), advanced quantitative methods (applied statistics, geo-spatial statistics), data science (geo-computation and big data) and evaluation. Our mission to deliver world-class theoretically driven, methodologically innovative and empirically rich research and teaching. Moreover, it seeks to deliver impactful research, supporting the strategic and operational decision-making of partners, within the region, nationally and internationally. These activities are underpinned through the development of secure and intelligent data system architectures, capable of hosting and interweaving sensitive and proprietary data with open data resources.

The BDC’s core leadership team comprises Professor Jon Bannister (director), Professor Liangxiu Han (Deputy Director - Computing), Professor Stephen Morris (Deputy Director - Evaluation), Dr. James Cheng (Deputy Director  - Well-Being & China) and Mark Ellison (Deputy Director – External Relations).

We have six full-time research associates and multiple associate members.
