Kickstart your career

To celebrate National Careers Week, we’re highlighting some of the key resources available to you as a student at Manchester Met. From creating a standout CV to developing key employment skills - we’re here to help you get the best start to your career.

Use your My Five Year Plan (MY 5YP) to help you identify the skills you want to develop and then set yourself short and long-term goals to help you achieve them. It’s also a great way to track of where you are now and where you want to be.

Six career resources available to Manchester Met students:

1.     Labour Market Information

Discover our Labour Market Information Tool, which can help you find a career that is perfect for you. Explore a host of roles across 90 careers and discover helpful facts about each role, such as employment growth, average working hours and salaries, as well as common tasks and essential qualifications.

If you are looking for a role to match your current skill set, you can use this resource to search by skills and identify the job roles that match. With a single click, you can find matching vacancies and apply for a job.

2.     CV360

Check out CV360, an online resource that helps you optimise your CV. Regardless of whether you use a job board, CV database, recruiter, or apply directly to an employer, it is likely that your CV will be analysed by a machine before a human sets their eyes on it. It may only reach a person if the system considers your CV a good match for the company’s search. These systems, known as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), make the jobs of hiring managers easier but undoubtedly a lot harder for you.

CV360 scores your CV against more than 50 checks that commonly trip up an ATS (Applicant Tracking System), annoy a hiring manager or get your CV deprioritised. You get instant, detailed feedback so you can optimise your CV and significantly boost your chances of getting to an interview.

3.     Interview360

Interview360 helps you to get interview ready. As the hiring process is ever-changing, so are interviews. More employers are using video interviews as part of their recruitment process, but whether you are being interviewed online or in person, you need to practice.

Use this online tool to practice and perfect your interview technique by taking a mock interview and receiving instant feedback. It includes a comprehensive library of frequently asked interview questions along with key points to help you answer every one of them. You’ll get instant feedback and advice, and every question you answer will make you a stronger candidate. Make sure you check out all the latest advice on how to shine in online interviews.

4.     LinkedIn

LinkedIn helps you to build a professional network and establish your professional social media presence. Our Careers Advisers have put together this expert guide to help you make the most of your LinkedIn profile. This guide contains information on:

5.     Work Experience

Work experience of any kind makes you more attractive to employers. No matter what type of work you try, you will gain the skills and experience employers want. Find out more about the opportunities available to you.
