Introduction

Managing money at university can be challenging for any student, but we understand that studying without the support of your family can present some additional financial pressures.

Our Estranged Student Bursary supports eligible students with essential living costs over the summer break, or provides a contribution towards the cost of graduation in your final year.

How it works

Who is eligible?

To receive the Estranged Student Bursary, you must:

  • be a UK home student enrolled on a full-time or part-time Manchester Met undergraduate degree*
  • be an estranged student
  • be identified as estranged by the Student Loans Company
  • have a UK Student Support Number (English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland students)

*If you are repeating without attendance or suspended from your course, you may still be able to apply but please contact us to check your eligibility.

Who is estranged?

An estranged student is someone who:

  • is under the age of 25
  • has not had any contact with either parent (biological or adoptive) for a significant period of time, and this is unlikely to change. Usually, a significant period means 12 months or more, but it can be less in severe or exceptional cases of estrangement.

How to apply

Applications are open from Monday 8 January 2024 to Friday 22 March 2024.

Call our helpline on 0161 247 1045 and ask for the Estranged Student Bursary and we will send you a link to complete a short online application form. Follow the guidance in the application FAQs to avoid any delays to your application.

If this is your first time applying, you will need to submit evidence to confirm that Student Finance have classed you as an estranged student.  If you are struggling to provide the necessary evidence, please call our helpline on 0161 247 1045. You can also contact our Inclusion Service for more support.

We will notify you about the outcome of your application, including how much you will be paid from the bursary, by the end of April 2024.

Can I apply every year?

You can apply every year. If you received a bursary payment last year, you must re-apply this year as the bursary is not automatically reassessed. We rely on an application from you each year.
