Maths and Statistics Support

Our specialist Maths and Statistics Tutors can offer support if you have some element of maths within your degree.

They can help with anything from basic numeracy skills, through to the effective application of statistics within dissertation planning. You can access maths and stats support in several ways.

Workshops and webinars

We offer study skills workshops and webinars throughout the year. These cover a variety of topics related to maths and stats, such as: statistics at university, effective revision for maths/stats exams, quantitative research methods and preparing for numerical reasoning assessments.

Our workshops take place in locations on campus, or you can join one of our online webinars and engage with us from a location of your choice, including the comfort of your own home.

Online support

We have a range of recorded webinar screencasts which cover a variety of topics related to maths and stats, such as: statistics at university, effective revision for maths/stats exams, quantitative research methods and preparing for numerical reasoning assessments.

The screencasts include activities that you can complete, as well as information and tips. You can access the recordings at any time via Moodle.

Additional online support and resources are also available via our dedicated Moodle area. This includes links to recommended support sites, featuring videos and practice problems, diagnostic assessments to self-audit your knowledge and identify areas to improve, and bite-sized fact sheets to help with a variety of topics. Browse Moodle for the full range of resources.

If you have a query relating to maths or statistics, then you can contact us via e-mail. Tutors can provide e-mail advice, or signpost you to further resources/sources of support: studyskills@mmu.ac.uk   

One-to-one appointments  

Our one-to-one service allows students to develop their maths and statistics skills with direct support from a tutor. Students are encouraged to bring examples of questions that they need support with (although no direct help will be available for assignment questions, the tutor can devise similar questions to trial techniques) or the appointment can be used to develop effective strategies to tackle future topics. These 30 minute appointments can be booked by emailing studyskills@mmu.ac.uk. They can take place via phone or video call. 

Maths Equivalency Support course

This course is aimed at students who are looking to gain a GCSE qualification Grade C/4+ in mathematics to progress to postgraduate study. By attending you will learn foundations of GCSE maths to sit the equivalency assessment.

How is the course structured?

The course consists of learning from worked examples, step-by-step videos and plenty of quizzes. It will require 3/4 hours per week of independent learning throughout the course, alongside your studies. You must complete the course before you are able to enrol onto the Maths Equivalency assessment.

The next instance of the Maths Equivalency Support course will be commencing on Monday 30 January 2023. Teaching for the programme will finish in July 2023 and students can select a time suitable for them to sit the assessment, if they have completed all aspects of the course satisfactorily.

Booking information

The qualification is recognised only by select Higher Education providers. Employers are not obliged to accept this qualification in lieu of certified GCSE mathematics qualification.

This course is free to all Manchester Met students, please register with RISE to enrol on the course. RISE points are also offered to those who complete the course.
